From Sea-Tac Airport, take Interstate 5 south to Exit 142A (Highway 18 Auburn/North Bend). Stay on Hwy 18 for 13 miles. Take this. Exit 256th Street. Turn left at the light onto 256th Street and right at the first light onto 180th Avenue S.E.A. Continue straight after the triple stop. At the stop sign, turn right onto 240th Street.
Tahoma Military Cemetery
Tacoma National Cemetery was established on November 11, 1993 and opened for burials on October 1, 1997. The cemetery was dedicated on September 26, 1997. A small expansion project was completed in March 2006. The $6 million project included more than 12,000 new burial sites in the columbarium, over 5,000 prefabricated crypts, road improvements, new signage, a third mandatory shelter, and a third burial aisle at the public information center. The second phase of the expansion project was completed in June 2014. The $24 million project included more than 14,000 new columbarium niches, more than 9,000 pre-placed crypts, 6,000 cremation sites in the gardens, memorial walls and an ossuary. Two new access roads to the new burial sections were built with asphalt pavement. The three new Columbarium complexes contain rain gardens and bio-swamp to reduce the need for stormwater drains and retention ponds.

Tahoma has a Memorial Walk with 36 memorials commemorating soldiers of the various 20th century wars that were donated by various service organizations. There is a POW-MIA flag in the northeast corner of the walkway. At the southwest corner of the boardwalk is a chime donated by the Seattle Chapter of the 18th Fleet Naval Association and installed in 2010 dedicated to the volunteers of Tacoma National Cemetery.
The Blue Star Memorial is south of the Public Information Center. The sign was originally part of a banner that families hung in their homes in the 1940s to indicate that they had a loved one who fought in World War II. Today, the sign honors all veterans.
Staff Sergeant Nathan Ross Chapman - The first American soldier to die from enemy fire in the 2002 war in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Chapman was a communications specialist with the 1st Special Forces Group at Fort Lewis, Washington (Section 6, Site 33).

Local Veterans Face Challenges With Health Care
Born Philipp F. Smith in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from California High School at the age of 16. He joined the Coast Guard in September 1949 with tours of the USCG Cutters Rhododendron, the Bering Strait, and Staten Island. Land assignments have taken him to California, Alaska and Washington. In the Coast Guard's 13th District in Washington, Smith became one of the first senior counselors on record. He served as the Coast Guard's chief petty officer from 1973 to 1977, when he retired. MCPOCG Smith's invitation to the Coast Guard's Senior Enlisted Leader Program continues to influence the service in the changes he has made on behalf of enlisted personnel. He died on June 22, 2017 and is buried in Tahoma National Cemetery (Section 30B, Site 126).
Mary Jean Sturdant was born on September 28, 1921 in Oregon. The high school senior then became one of three women enrolled in Southern Oregon University's civic pilot program. After graduating, she became an instructor and trained Army Air Corps cadets. Sturdevant was accepted into the Women's Air Force Service Pilot Program (WASP), but her value as an instructor was more important. Based in Merced, California, she flew Army AT-6s and BT-13s and taught male pilots to fly until the WASP program ended in 1945. In 1977, the WASPs were recognized as veterans, and in 2009 they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Pilot Sturdevant died on June 24, 2017. She is buried in Tahoma National Cemetery (Section FI, Row B, Presence 3).
